Henry Cole, B.D., L.L.B.. D.L.L., succeeded Archdeacon Govett in 1903. He was a
scholar of wide experience who had seen much of the world when he came to
Taranaki. He had private means and as he did not enjoy good health he took long
sea journeys hoping to benefit from them. He lived with his wife and family in
Ronald Street, Strandon. The house was later used as a hostel for boarders at
the New Plymouth Girls' High School. Archdeacon Cole had no definite parish.
the Home Mission being his responsibility and this work prospered greatly
under his guidance. A number of priests came from England to join the Mission
in Taranaki. among the being George Cruickshank. afterwards Dean of Dunedin
and later Bishop of Waiapu. The Archdeacon paid great attention to the church
at Te Henui, restoring it chiefly at his own cost. Mrs. Cole and her sister.
Miss Hamilton also took a great interest in the work of the church. Under their
guidance the Sunday School increased three-fold. Mrs. Cole gave her services as
organist and a guild was formed to clean and care for the church. After World
War 1 Archdeacon Cole and his family went to Auckland where he died in 1935 and
in accordance with his wishes he was buried in Te Henui cemetery. He left a sum
of mono, to provide an income for an Archdeacon of Taranaki. Henry
Handley Brown M.A.. (181318931, was ordained priest in 1837 and ministered as
vicar of Burton. Lincolnshire. from 1837-1858. With his wife and family of six
sons and live daughters he sailed for New Zealand in the "Eclipse" in
1858. arriving in 1859 after a voyage lasting four months. Hi, first appoinment
was to °matt. Mr. Brown was affectionately known throughout the arch- deaconry
as "Parson Brown." He journeyed many miles on horseback to the
outlying districts and he worked earnestly for thirty years in Taranaki. With
his death closed the :pioneering" era of the parish. He was buried in St.

Beaumont was living in semiretirement in Blenheim at the time of his death in
March, 1970. He took a great interest in the compilation of these notes for
